Rootella Carbon Credits: Durable Nature-Based Carbon Dioxide Removal

Build Your Net-Zero Portfolio with Durable Carbon Dioxide Removal Credits

Rootella Carbon® is an end-to-end durable Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) solution that leverages mycorrhiza, the Queen of Biologicals, to deliver scalability, integrity, and permanence.

Groundwork BioAg® is the project proponent and developer. Responsibilities include overall development and oversight of the Verra VM0042 v2.0 project including soil sampling and analysis, carbon credit sales, and distribution of up to 70% of carbon credit net proceeds to growers.

Rootella® application is the only measured practice change. Most growers use reduced tillage, maintaining mycorrhizal regeneration across seasons. Growers benefit from a new revenue stream that is independent of commodity prices, on top of agronomic benefits of mycorrhiza, including crop yield increases, fertilizer savings, and resistance to stress.

From Rootella to Carbon: Permanence and Integrity

High CDR Effect Size: 1.5-3.5 tCO₂e/ac annual sequestration. The verified average net effect size of the 2023 cohort was 2.88 tCO₂e/ac, as measured across 8,808 treated and creditable acres in the US mid-west and mid-south. The average net effect size of the 2024 cohort was 2.31 tCO₂e/ac, as measured across 125K acres in North America, and is currently under verification.

Immediate Scalability: Rootella Carbon is administered through the Rootella Carbon Software Platform which enables rapid scale-up. The program grew by 10x in 2024 in North America and will expand to Brazil in 2026. Within this territory there are over 325M acres of low-till/no-till farms that are otherwise ineligible for carbon credits and represent an immediate market. Rootella mycorrhizal inoculants are currently sold across 3.7M acres annually in 23 markets, including the US, Brazil, India and China.

Permanence: Mycorrhizae catalyze (5-10X) the formation of Mineral-Associated Organic Carbon, considered durable for centuries to millennia. Project-level durability is built into the Verra methodology, including a 21% buffer pool.

Integrity: Rootella Carbon complies with the Verra VM0042 v2.0 methodology (Measure and Remeasure approach with Rootella-treated and control plots). Validation and verification managed by SCS Global Services, a third-party Verra-certified VVB

End-to-End Integrated Solution: The Rootella Carbon’s comprehensive program begins with biological product sales to growers and culminates in carbon credit sales to buyers.
